Ice Cream Study: Use any of the Excel techniques you have learned to determine if the data shows any relationship between ice cream consumption and the variables price, income, year, season, or temperature.  You may work with a partner. Your grade will be based on whether you identify all the relationships that exist and how clearly your analysis supports your conclusions. Note: There are many ways that you may analyze the data to see which variables affect ice cream consumption. No group's work should be identical to another's.

Ice Cream Study follow up

If you have not already done so, create the following graphs:

-Temperature variation over time

-Consumption variation over time

-Temperature by month of year (one graph - separate by year)

-Consumption by month of year (one graph - separate by year)

To plot multiple data sets on one graph:

              1. Insert a column and assign each month a numeric value (the first month data was collected was March, so assign that a 3 and then 4 for April

...all the way through 12 for december) NOTE: Change the number in cell G24 from 1 to 2.

              2. Highlight the numeric month data and the temperature data for year zero and create an XY scatter plot.

               3. Right click on a data point and click "source data"

               4. Click to Add a series and then highlight the numeric months for year 1 as the X data and the temperature for year 1 as the Y data. Click ok

               5. Repeat steps 3& 4 for year 2.

              6. Repeat steps 2-5 for the ice cream consumption data.

Look at these graphs and decide if increases in temperature cause an increase in ice cream consumption. (support your conclusion) If temperature is not the cause of increased consumption, look at your graphs and suggest another possible cause of increased ice cream consumptioon.

US Crime Study

These data are crime-related and demographic statistics for 47 US states in 1960. The data were collected from the FBI's Uniform Crime Report and other government agencies to determine how the variable crime rate depends on the other variables measured in the study.

Use graphing and other statistical calculations to determine if a relationship exists between crime and the variables. Organize your work using separate sheets in Excel.
